Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital Presents “Implementation of Local Health Integrated Network (LHIN) Wide EHR”

June 12, 2008

From the Show Floor of the CHIMA Annual Conference - Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, June 12, 2008 –– With a decade worth of strides toward a paperless environment, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital has established a model environment for electronic medical records. Alison Anderson, HIM Director and Maureen Robbins, Health Records & Privacy Coordinator, will be presenting the benefits and challenges of this endeavor on June 13 at the CHIMA Annual Conference.

This session will outline the process of establishing a shared system for electronic medical record across the Erie-St.Clair LHIN (4 of 5 hospitals), including the advancement of electronic access to community partners. Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital in Windsor, Ontario has provided electronic access to medical records for healthcare professionals and their patient’s circle of care team since 1997. This experience has proven to be beneficial as Ontario restructures healthcare toward a Local Health Integrated Network.

Today, Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital integrates ten years of patient data from individual systems into one comprehensive and paperless view. This accomplishment has sparked benefits for the whole hospital enterprise, including the ability to provide concurrent electronic access to hospital records to physicians, other hospitals and community partners.

Expansion projects include electronic access to discharged patients records as patients continue their continuity of care in long term care facilities and local community centres. Over the past year, this vision now includes LHIN hospital partners sharing in the same document management system, SolComHealth. This system allows instant electronic access across the organizations to our community and regional patients. “The adoption of SolComHealth across our LHIN has given us the ability to strategically facilitate the transition of our organizations, in partnership, to a full electronic health record and improve concurrent and instant access to support clinical decision making across the care spectrum,” says Alison Anderson.
