Five Toronto hospitals are the recipients of a $50-million charitable donation from the Slaight Family Foundation.
The donation, announced Tuesday, will be distributed equally, with $10 million each provided to the University Health Network, St. Michael’s Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and Mount Sinai Hospital.
The Slaight family built a radio empire that it sold in 2007 to Astral Media Inc.
St. Michael’s plans to use the monies to double the size of its emergency department.
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre will use its share for cutting edge technology to treat and repair brain disease.
The University Health Network will buy a whole-body MRI machine.
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health plans to develop new approaches to treating youth with severe mental health and addictions problems.
Mount Sinai plans to improve its labour and delivery centre and to provide prenatal and perinatal mental health outreach services to marginalized and vulnerable women.
