Health officials worry Alberta NDP’s Bill 5 could result in criminal targeting

Health professionals fear the NDP government's expanded sunshine list could result in the criminal targeting of high-paid doctors and nurses.
Both the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) and the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) have expressed concerns over the NDP government's Bill 5: the Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act.
Bill 5 extends the province's salary disclosure requirements to government-supported organizations like universities and Alberta Health Services, allowing the government to post the total compensation for any public workers earning over $125,000 annually.
In a letter to doctors on Wednesday, AMA President Dr. Carl Nohr highlighted a need for the bill to balance transparency and personal privacy as many doctors "indicated very strong privacy concerns regarding the publication of amounts paid."
"Potential unintended consequences include criminal targeting of physicians homes and families, unfair business practices, identity theft and sophisticated targeting of individuals by cyber criminals," writes Nohr.
