“United States health reform: interesting but incomprehensible. 47 million Americans without health insurance: only the strong survive!” Steven Lewis writes and presents a four-minute video.
Back-to-School Health and the New E-parents: "Back-to-School-itis" is hard not only on kids, but on parents, too. What are parents worried about most this week, and why? "Mommy" and "Daddy" blogs tell a story worth examining. Neil Seeman
The US-based Breakthrough Institute and the Third Way have been awarded the Global Accelerator Award for their proposal to create a National Institutes of Energy modeled after the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Accelerator Award considers human health, and the determinants of health, in a broad sense. This includes the promotion of clean energy initiatives, of the sort imagined by the joint proposal from the Breakthrough Institute and the Third Way. The joint proposal notes that “a new National Institutes of Energy (NIE) would effectively apply R&D funding to the goal of developing new, low-cost commercial clean energy technologies. The NIE would function as a nationwide network of regionally based, commercially focused, and coordinated innovation institutes.”

IN THE USA. . . . all the bright, ambitious immigrants . . . are leaving the United States and returning home, especially to India and China. That is the topic of a report, “America’s Loss Is the World’s Gain” (PDF) from the Kauffman Foundation. In the last two decades, 50,000 immigrants left the United States and returned to India and China. In the next five years, researchers project that 100,000 more will make the return trip. Here’s Why: Economics, is the main engine of the shift. Researchers surveyed 1,203 Indian and Chinese workers who had studied or worked in the United States for a year or more before returning home. Growing demand for their skills and shining career opportunities back home were cited by 87 percent of the Chinese and 79 percent of the Indians as the major professional reason for returning. Most also cited the lure of being close to family and friends. | MacLean’s suggests: Given Canada’s strength, this may be our time to pull out of America’s shadow. Yet, developing countries still serve as a readily available source of trained nurses for developed countries in Europe, North America and parts of Oceania and According to CIHI, the Percent of Physicians in Canada Who Are International Medical Graduates (IMGs), by Province and Territory, 1977, 1987, 1997, 2007 (PDF) has been on the decrease since 1977.

Do Non-Exercising Chicken Promote Obesity in Humans? The authors note that, as in humans, the cocktail of gene selection for fast weight gain, lack of exercise and high-energy food available 24 hours a day, is a simple and well-understood recipe for obesity. The authors conclude “While chicken was at one time a lean, low-fat food, it is no longer”.

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a pressing patient safety concern, yet healthcare administrators and providers tend to view them as less of a threat than adverse events such as medication errors and falls.
