Google Analytics can tell us a lot. What do our readers read; how long do they stay on our site; what are their most demanding days; what are their least demanding days; where do readers come from; what media do they prefer; how do we compare year over year, or day by day; what key words do they use to search; and more. A lot more. We monitor this and fine tune our website in response.

As more and more is added to our websites, more and more of our readers respond. Some 80,000 visits are logged on longwoods.com every month: that’s close to a million visits a year.

Despite those numbers we have slipped to second place behind CMAJ.ca in the ratings of selected healthcare publication websites. This is according to Alexa.com – the standard in website online rankings. Statistics from our last report of October 14, 2011 are shown in grey type. Today is June 27, 2012 and we report the rankings in black type. New on the list is HealthyDebate.ca – affiliated with the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto. It replaces Healthcare Management Forum (published by Elsevier for the Canadian College of Health Leaders.)

What the numbers mean:
Alexa is a measure of popularity. A lower ranking is better. The rank is calculated using a combination of average daily visitors and pageviews on a selected website over the past 3 months. The site with the highest combination of visitors and pageviews is ranked #1. For example, Google, Facebook and YouTube rank 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The rankings may be updated daily. In 2008 Google estimated a trillion unique URLs, and the number of individual web pages that is growing by several billion pages per day.
