Great paper. We did a similar project in Sydney at a major teaching hospital. We found that 79% of emergency department admissions of older people (aged 75 years and over) were avoidable. We organised an expert panel to examine a cohort of 100 admissions and there was unanimous agreement for those 79% that they met our criteria for avoidable. The implications for the way we run emergency and hospital care services were so great that I was told not to publish by a senior academic. We went on to develop and implement a program through the NSW Health Department to head off and find alternative pathways for older people needing acute or subacute care.
