CPOE with Evidence-Based Clinical Decision Support Improves Patient Outcomes: Part 2 – Proof from a Canadian Hospital
Part 1 of this story (see www.longwoods.com/content/23780) described the eCare project at North York General Hospital (NYGH), a multi-year clinical transformation initiative to improve the quality and safety of patient care through the implementation of advanced electronic health record systems such as computerized provider order entry (CPOE) and clinical decision support. The eCareimplementation strategy, phases of development, challenges faced and the significance of evidence-based design with care standardization were illustrated. This second part of the story identifies the key success factors for eCare at NYGH, as well as quality and safety outcomes garnered to date. It is our hope that understanding the NYGH approach will help other organizations think about their engagement efforts – which need to be tailored for their organization.
