Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday the federal government has reached an agreement with Pfizer Inc. to purchase an additional 20 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccines.
Speaking outside of his residence at Rideau Cottage, Mr. Trudeau said the additional doses are to arrive in April or May.
The Prime Minister’s announcement was made as the Liberal government faces political pressure to secure additional vaccines for Canadians amid soaring case numbers and a rising death toll.
Provinces including Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, British Columbia and Alberta have raised concerns about the need for steady, reliable flow of vaccines.
Mr. Trudeau said Tuesday that agreements with Pfizer, as well as Moderna Inc., mean that the country will now have 80 million doses of vaccines arriving this year.
He also reiterated that the government is on track to ensure every Canadian who wants a vaccine can receive one by September.
