New SMHC patient engagement project
St Mary’s is launching an ambitious project to enhance the involvement of patients in quality improvement for patient care
Montreal, November 11th, 2010 – A project team from St Mary’s Hospital Centre (SMHC) is one of ten groups across Canada awarded funds by the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) for “patient engagement projects” that aim to enhance patient involvement to improve the quality of care. The SMHC research team received $100,000 from CHSRF, and contributions from St Mary’s Hospital and the Users’ Committee. The project was launched in October 2010 and the team expects to complete the project by the fall of 2012,
“We are extremely proud and grateful to CHSRF for supporting our project,” rejoices Dr Bruce Brown, Project Lead and Vice-President of Professional Services, SMHC. “This funding recognizes the excellent work to involve patients to date at St Mary’s and will help us engage with patients to a greater extent as active partners in our organization.”
The project is divided into two overlapping components. First the patient representatives involved in the Users’ Committee, Quality Improvement teams, the Research Ethics Committee, and other committees, will receive training to support their role in representing patients more effectively. Then the Quality Improvement teams together with the patients’ representatives will develop information tools in three pilot program areas (oncology, mental health and emergency) that aim to improve patients’ experience of care and health outcomes.
“The current Users’ Committee is very enthusiastic about taking part in this project,” explains Patricia McDougall, President of the users’ committee, SMHC. “Although SMHC has always taken our input into consideration and put a lot of emphasis on patients’ well-being, we realize that we are currently limited in our abilities and resources. This project should allow us to go beyond that and to be better equipped to translate the patients’ voices into real progress.”
St. Mary’s Hospital Center (SMHC) is a university affiliated, community hospital which serves a multicultural population. It seeks to provide the highest level of safe patient and family focused care. St. Mary’s is an integral part of the Réseau universitaire intégré de santé (RUIS) McGill.
