Open Access Policy
Longwoods’ Open Access License Agreement
Rights retained by the Author when publishing an Open Access Article.
Users have the right to reproduce, disseminate or display articles published under this model for educational purposes, provided that:
- the original authorship is properly and fully attributed;
- the Journal and Longwoods are attributed as the original place of publication with the correct citation details given;
- if an article is subsequently reproduced or disseminated not in its entirety but only in part or as a derivative work this must be clearly indicated
- the right to deposit the postprint and/or URL or PDF of the finally published version of the article into an institutional or centrally organized repository, immediately upon publication
All Longwoods’ Open Access articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license which was developed to facilitate free immediate access to and unrestricted use of original works.
Through this initiative, authors of accepted, original research papers will be given the opportunity to pay an Open Access publication charge to make their paper freely available online immediately upon publication of the issue. This means that readers will not need a journal subscription or have to pay a fee to view Open Access content. If an author does not choose to pay the Open Access publication charge, their paper will be published in the normal manner, but it will not necessarily be made freely available online immediately. This means that there will be a mixture of Open Access and non-Open Access original peer reviewed research papers within each journal. All peer reviewed research papers in the journal, Healthcare Policy | Politiques de Santé will be made Open Access 12 months after publication, at which time the full issues will also be made available on PubMed Central.
In order to view the non-Open Access content, a current subscription to the participating journal or a purchase of the single article will be required. Online only and combined print + online subscription options are available to individuals and institutions. For more information, click here.
This policy means that users have unrestricted rights to re-use Open Access content for educational and research purposes but not for commercial purposes. We believe that this provision will have several benefits: Longwoods Publishing (or their agents) can continue to act as a central point of contact for commercial re-use requests and will seek to protect the original author and the journal from misuse of published content; revenue resulting from such permission requests will be used by the participating journals to supplement publication charges for authors, thus helping to keep these charges as low as possible; and Longwoods Publishing will be able to monitor commercial re-use that could directly harm the business interests of the journal.
Longwoods’ Open Access Author Self-Archiving
Authors who choose to participate in the Longwoods’ Open Access initiative and pay to have their paper freely available online are also entitled to deposit a post-print of their accepted manuscript and/or the finally published version of the article into an institutional or centrally organized subject repository, immediately upon publication. This is provided that they include a link to the published version of the article on the journal's web site, and that the journal and Longwoods Publishing Corporation are attributed as the original place of publication, with correct citations given.
A post-print is defined as the final draft author manuscript, as accepted for publication, including modifications based on referees' suggestions, copyediting and proof correction.
Please note: Authors not choosing the Longwoods’ Open Access option may archive only the finally published version of their article upon publication.
Optional Author Publication Charges for 2019
Healthcare Policy | Politiques de Santé - $2,500* (non-member rate) / $1,875* (member rate)
Nursing Leadership (CJNL) - $2,500* (non-member rate) / $1,875* (member rate)
*Applicable taxes will be added
For each of the journals listed above, authors will have the option to pay for Open Access to their paper. Special discounted charges will apply to authors in developing countries, visit our Developing Countries page for a list of qualifying countries. Discounted prices are also available to researchers affiliated with Institutional members of the Longwoods HealthcareBoard. Please contact permissions@longwoods.com for information or to find out if your institution qualifies. We have chosen to set the same optional charges for each participating journal. In reality the actual per article cost associated with publishing in each journal varies, depending on such factors as frequency of issues, number and length of papers published, submission numbers and rejection rates. In the current funding climate, where many authors may not be able to cover the full costs of publication, a model that utilizes a mixture of funding sources (publication charges, subscriptions, advertising, etc) is more realistic.
Authors who choose to participate in the Longwoods’ Open Access initiative and pay to have their paper freely available online will be asked to sign an Open Access license to publish, which reflects the Open Access model outlined below. (Please see forms at bottom of page.)
Upon acceptance, all corresponding authors of peer reviewed research papers will be required to complete a license to publish form (below), and those authors selecting the Open Access option will then be required to complete an additional Open Access charge form (below).
All Longwoods’ Open Access articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) which was developed to facilitate free immediate access to and unrestricted use of original works.
