History of the Ted Freedman Award for Innovation in Education
In 2000 the Ted Freedman Award for Innovation in Education was created.
Ted Freedman was the surprised honoree of an annual award launched by Healthcare Quarterly in cooperation with Agilent Technologies. The award recognizes those people who inspire, advocate and enable education in healthcare. The winners are honoured with a self-portrait in bronze of the artist as a patient recovering from brain surgery by award-winning sculptor Amy Switzer of Barrie, Ontario.

Award Winners:
Congratulations to Pierrette Price Arsenault, Tricia Beath, Tasleen Adatia, Lisa Bitonti-Bengert and Dr. Timothy Jackson from Ontario Health (Quality) for winning the 2020 Ted Freedman Award for Innovation in Education in recognition of their program: The Ontario Surgical Quality Improvement Network Community of Practice - Improving Surgical Care in Ontario.
The judges congratulate this program on having such a strong impact in a short time on the healthcare community and continuing support of hospitals plus its further potential for growth.

2019 Winner:
Congratulations to the Ontario College of Family Physicians for winning the 2019 Ted Freedman Award for Innovation in Education in recognition of their program: Collaborative Mentoring Networks (CMN). The award was presented at CAHSPR 2019 in Halifax and accepted by Dr. Arun Radhakrishnan.

The 2018 Ted Freedman Award was awarded to the Baycrest Centre for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care. The 2017 Award had Two Winners
The first 2017 Ted Freedman Award was awarded to the Department of General Internal Medicine, University of Toronto and, Department of General Internal Medicine, Mount Sinai Hospital. The second 2017 Ted Freedman Award was awarded to the Association of Faculties of Medicine (AFMC), Association of Faculties of Pharmacy (AFPC), Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) and Canada Health Infoway (Infoway). The 2012 Ted Freedman Award was awarded to the Australasian College of Health Service Management, La Trobe University -School of Public Health and Human Biosciences, and Australian Centre for Leadership Development for their submission - Clinical Leadership in Quality and Safety (CLiQS)
The 2011 Ted Freedman Award was awarded to the Canadian Patient Safety Institute and Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, (CHSRF) for their joint submission on Workshops for Effective Governance for Quality and Patient Safety.
2010 Ted Freedman Award for Innovation in Education - Sponsored by Accenture.
UBC's Distributed Medical Education Program as it addressed and continues to address the shortages of medical doctors in underserved regions and underserved populations. Using a Distributed Medical Education Program the program succeeded and in the process produces doctors educated in British Columbia who stay in British Columbia.
