Vitamin A is important for eye function — especially for the retina, the part of the eye that senses light. Decreased night vision is an early sign of Vitamin A deficiency. Carrots are high in this crucial vitamin, so there is a grain of truth to this myth.

But in Canada and the rest of the developed world, our diets usually provide enough Vitamin A that it’s rare to see this kind of deficiency here.

Too little Vitamin A is risky, but there’s no benefit to having more than your body needs.

If you worry about your vision, I recommend quitting smoking and maintaining a healthy diet. The best food for your eyes — either in a single serving or spread out over the course of a week — is a cup of spinach, kale or other dark green leafy vegetables. Sweet potatoes are also great and have more Vitamin A than carrots!
