Cliff Nordal receives Canada’s highest distinction in Catholic Healthcare

(Ottawa) – The 2010 Performance Citation Award— Canada’s highest distinction in Catholic health care—was awarded to Cliff Nordal, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Care, London (St. Joseph’s) and London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), in recognition of his outstanding commitment to the values of Catholic health care.

With 41 years in hospital leadership, Cliff is uniquely qualified for this award. He is Ontario’s longest serving CEO, having spent the last 28 years at the helm of four hospital organizations: Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Toronto, the Rehabilitation Institute of Toronto, St. Joseph’s and LHSC.  He is a recognized health care leader, whose energy and wisdom have served health care policy initiatives at the local provincial and national levels. He has worked in close partnership with others to advance the most integrated system of hospital care in Ontario.

During Cliff’s 12 years in London, he has demonstrated an unselfish dedication to others and to the ministry of Catholic health care. His significant contributions at St. Joseph’s have ensured the continued existence, vitality and future of Catholic health care in London. The committees he has promoted at St. Joseph’s expand the understanding of what it means to be a Catholic health care organization today.

In presenting Cliff with his award Michael Shea, CHAC chair, said,” What Cliff Nordal has accomplished in London, Ontario stands as a model for health care generally, but in particular for Catholic health care in Ontario and in the whole of Canada, and it would not have happened but for his extraordinary and focused leadership.”

The award was presented on May 1 during the CHC annual conference. The presentation of the Performance Citation Award was initiated in 1981. It is presented each year by the CHAC to an individual who exemplifies leadership in an activity, program or project judged worthy of national recognition for its strengthening of the Catholic health ministry in an extraordinary way.
