WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 16, 2010) Four Energy Leadership Awards were presented this week during the 21st Annual Energy Efficiency Forum, co-sponsored by Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI) and the U.S. Energy Association (USEA).  

The awards, which recognize individuals who have provided exemplary leadership in instituting and advancing energy efficiency in the United States and abroad, were presented to: Representative Steve Israel (D-N.Y.); Ken Morin, project engineer, and Chuck Svoboda, senior mechanical engineer, National Operations Centers, U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM); and Murray Glendining, executive vice president, corporate affairs, Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS). These individuals were nominated by their community; winners were selected by a sub-committee of the Energy Efficiency Forum Executive Council.

The Honorable Steve Israelís energy accomplishments include proposing and helping to pass the successful 'Cash for Clunkers' program and introducing H.R. 3836. In 2009, Rep. Israel proposed and passed the ìSolar Villages Initiative,î which will spread U.S. solar energy technologies in villages throughout the developing world. Rep. Israel also voted in favor of the American Clean Energy and Security Act, which includes his provision to expand Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) bond programs.

Through PACE bonds, homeowners and businesses can save money on their monthly energy costs while new green jobs are created in the U.S. clean energy industry.

Ken Morin and Chuck Svoboda from the U.S. BLM developed a way to bundle 150 BLM facilities into a $23 million performance contract aimed at reducing energy use by 30 percent and saving $1.2 million in annual energy costs. The contract also includes the installation of 1 megawatt of renewable energy at 23 BLM facilities. This innovative, streamlined project won a Presidential Energy Management Leadership Award and has advanced green procurement and energy and water conservation into standard practice at the Bureau.

Murray Glendining from HHS was instrumental in initiating a $50 million energy retrofit project to improve four different hospital sites, using the operating budgets already in place. The project—one of the largest health care energy retrofits in Canada resulted in energy savings of more than $5.5 million and a greener work environment that garnered HHS recognition as one of Canadaís Top 100 employers by Maclean's every year from 2005 to 2009.

The awards were presented during the 21^st Annual Energy Efficiency Forum, being held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on June 15-16 and being webcast online through the Virtual Energy Forum. Speakers during the Forum include: U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke; David Sandalow, assistant secretary for policy and international affairs, U.S. Department of Energy; Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.); Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.); Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm; Influence author and OPOWER Chief Scientist Robert Cialdini, Ph.D.; Mason Emnett, associate director of the Office of Energy Policy and Innovation, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC); and Timothy E. Wirth, president of the United Nations Foundation and Better World Fund. They provided insights into this yearís Forum theme, 'Energy Efficiency: Innovative Approaches, Proven Solutions.'
