Letter from the IHI Board Chairman
Dear Friend of IHI,
By now you have likely heard the exciting news that President Obama has decided to exercise his authority for “recess appointment” to enable IHI’s President and CEO, Don Berwick, to begin serving as the new administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Don is expected to be sworn in very soon. He feels honored to be appointed, and all of us at IHI are thrilled that the White House has turned to an IHI leader to fill this crucial position within the Department of Health & Human Services. Don will have the opportunity to advance the cause of health care improvement at a time when the future of our health care system is inextricably linked to the future health of the American people and the US economy.
With great enthusiasm, IHI’s Board of Directors has decided that Maureen Bisognano, IHI’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, will succeed Don as President and CEO of IHI. Maureen has been Don’s chief partner in IHI’s management and vision since she joined IHI in 1995. She is a prominent authority on improving health care systems and is well known and widely respected throughout the global health care improvement community. We look forward to Maureen’s leadership as IHI continues to expand its role in advocating and implementing health care improvement around the world.
We invite you to read a press release that summarizes these exciting developments – or go to the homepage of IHI for a variety of useful information, announcements, and coverage.
Thank you for your hard work and for all the support you’ve expressed and offered to Don and everyone at IHI throughout this entire process.
Best regards,
A. Blanton Godfrey
IHI Board Chairman
