Trent University Announces New Dean of the Trent-Fleming School of Nursing

Dr. Kirsten Woodend will assume administrative role effective July 1, 2011

Thursday, March 31, 2011, Peterborough, ON

Trent University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kirsten Woodend as the new dean of the Trent-Fleming School of Nursing, effective July 1, 2011.

Dr. Woodend will assume the role from Ms. Wendy Fucile, current dean of the Trent-Fleming School of Nursing, who has provided excellent leadership in the position since 2007.

Dr. Woodend is currently an associate professor at the University of Ottawa School of Nursing. She served as the director and associate dean of the School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa until June of 2010. She is also a senior investigator for the Nursing Best Practice Unit as well as a clinical scientist with the Élisabeth-Bruyère Research Institute.

She has held other administrative positions including director of Epidemiology in Public Health and director of Research with the Canadian Pharmacists Association. She has been awarded more than one million dollars in research funding as a primary investigator and more than three million dollars as a co-investigator. As a clinical scientist with the Élisabeth-Bruyère Research Institute, Dr. Woodend is building a research program to improve continuity in stroke and wound care. She also sits on the Board of the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing, is a member of the College of Nurses Academic Advisory Group and is a Governor (ex-officio) of the Board of The Ottawa Hospital.

She began practising as a nurse in 1979 and subsequently completed a M.Sc. in Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa and a Ph.D. in Medical Science at the University of Toronto.

"I look forward to joining both Trent University and the Trent-Fleming School of Nursing in July,” said Dr. Woodend.  “This young, dynamic School has many opportunities for growth in reputation, research, and partnerships, which I hope we will fulfill together over the coming years".

“Trent University is very pleased to welcome Dr. Woodend in her new role,” said Dr. Gary Boire, provost and vice-president academic.

“Her extensive knowledge of the health sciences field and significant accomplishments will be an asset to the Trent-Fleming School of Nursing and to the Trent community as a whole.”

Dr. Boire also paid tribute to Prof. Wendy Fucile on her years of service as dean of the Trent-Fleming School of Nursing.

“Prof. Fucile’s leadership and service to Trent over the years has been superb,” said Dr. Boire. “Under her direction, the School of Nursing has been recognized as the province’s leading partnership model in the delivery of outstanding curriculum in the sciences, social sciences, nursing theory and practice applications. We are indebted to Prof. Fucile for her many contributions and achievements.”
