Group from Toronto Western Hospital wins HOOPP award for innovative frontline care

Unit 3B, General Internal Medicine, at Toronto Western Hospital, are the winners of the first-ever Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) Award for Leading Innovation in Front Line Care.

The unit won the award due to their creative solution of a documentation tool issue that arose in a patient mobility program. Through teamwork and innovation, they came up with a much more user-friendly documentation tool that works not only for the patients, but for the professionals treating them – and the new tool will be used in other programs at Toronto Western.

“HOOPP recognizes the importance of teamwork in providing high quality service,” says John Crocker, HOOPP President & CEO. “It is essential to our success as an organization – where employees are united in a common goal to deliver on the pension promise for all healthcare workers in Ontario. Exceptional teamwork, as shown by Unit 3B, enables healthcare providers to deliver the quality care we all depend on.”

"Toronto Western Hospital's 3B Unit Council is working alongside many other healthcare team members in improving the mobilization (and therefore, outcomes) of the patients we care for,” says Megan Thiessen-Bock, one of the award winners from Toronto Western Hospital. She says it was an honour to receive the HOOPP Award.

“We hope that our work in documenting the patient's progress in an efficient way will increase the effectiveness of our efforts, both by promoting awareness amongst nursing staff, and illustrating challenges we meet and interventions we make," she says.

The award was announced at a recent General Internal Medicine Symposium, held at the MaRs Centre in Toronto. The day-long event covered such topics as re-imagining the design of hospital wards to be more functional, ideas on better care for the elderly, a presentation on a “virtual” ward for helping patients between doctor visits, the use of everyday electronic devices, like smart phones, to provide remote care, and more.

At the event, Crocker spoke about the value of pension portability – HOOPP is delivered at more than 370 healthcare employers across the province, allowing healthcare workers to change jobs without having the change their pension plan.

About the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan

Created in 1960, the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) is the pension plan of choice for Ontario’s hospital and community-based healthcare sector with over 370 participating employers and more than 260,000 members and retirees. HOOPP invests the assets of its $35.7 billion Fund, administers the Plan and pays more than $1.2 billion per year in pension benefits. The HOOPP defined benefit plan is a formula based benefit that provides security and peace of mind to Ontario’s healthcare workforce.

HOOPP was named one of Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures in 2010.

HOOPP is governed by a Board of Trustees with representation from the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) and four unions: the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA), the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The unique governance model provides representation from both employers and unions in support of the long-term interests of the Plan.
