York Central Hospital Welcomes New Chief of Staff
York Central Hospital’s Board of Trustees, announces that Dr. Eric Fonberg will assume the position of Chief of Staff of York Central Hospital effective June 6, 2011.
An Emergency physician with a track record of leadership excellence in both public and private sector health care, Dr. Fonberg brings extensive clinical expertise, demonstrated medical leadership skills in a multi-site environment, as well as considerable governance and management consulting experience to the position. He has a Masters of Public Health from Harvard University and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Toronto. He is also a Chartered Director from the McMaster University/Conference Board of Canada’s Directors College.
Currently, as well as working as an Emergency Physician at another GTA hospital, Dr. Fonberg is an experienced health care consultant who has provided strategic and operational expertise on more than 100 projects for clients that include hospitals, regional health authorities, government, physician organizations, provincial health care systems and private sector companies. He is the Chair of the Board of Directors of Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences.
Dr. Fonberg was the Vice President, Strategy and Clinical Integration for the Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) and Chief, Medical Quality and Utilization. He was also Interim Corporate Chief, Emergency Medicine at RVHS. Dr. Fonberg was Chief, Emergency Medicine at Toronto East General Hospital and St. Joseph’s Health Centre respectively before going to RVHS.
In addition to his professional experience, Dr. Fonberg has several academic appointments. He is a Faculty Member with York University’s Shulich School of Business’ Masters Certificate in Health Care Management, a Faculty Member with Sprott School of Business’ Master’s Certificate in Health Care Management and lecturer in the University of Toronto’s Department of Family and Community Medicine and the Department of Health Policy Management and Evaluation.
The Board also wishes to extend its sincere appreciation to Dr. Larry Grossman for his strong leadership of our medical staff over the past five years. During his time as Chief of Staff, Dr. Grossman has enhanced physician accountability through the introduction accountability agreements for all medical leaders. A strong supporter of the hospital’s LEAN initiatives, he has also helped to strengthen relationships between the medical staff and hospital management. We wish him well in his future endeavours and thank him for his support and engagement during his time here as Chief of Staff.
