St. John's Rehab Hospital Board of Directors elects new Chair

TORONTO, June 21, 2011 - St. John’s Rehab Hospital is pleased to announce the election of Stephen Beatty as the newest Chair of the Board of Directors, effective June 20, 2011.

Mr. Beatty will lead the Board as the hospital continues to reach the goals set out in Next Steps, the hospital’s five-year strategic plan, and moves closer to its vision – to be at the forefront of specialized rehab care. He takes over this responsibility as the hospital prepares to open its new, state-of-the-art outpatient facility and celebrates nearly 75 years of rehabilitation excellence.

“I am honoured to work with the Board of Directors and the hospital during such an exciting time of growth,” says Mr. Beatty. “St. John’s Rehab Hospital continues to advance rehabilitation research and education, and builds an improved continuum of care. I look forward to playing a part in building the future of rehabilitation in Ontario.”

Mr. Beatty is the Head of KPMG's Public/Private Advisory practice – Americas and brings an excellent track record of health care knowledge. He joined the St. John’s Rehab Hospital Board in 2001 and has served as Vice-Chair for the past three years.

He also has a long history of involvement with St. John’s Rehab. He is the third generation of Beatty family members to serve on the Board as a Director and eventually as Chair. He follows in the footsteps of his father Clifford W. Beatty and his grandfather C.G. Beatty, who first served as a Director when the hospital opened in 1937.

Mr. Beatty was elected and confirmed as Chair at the hospital’s Annual General Meeting on Monday, as former Chair Joyce Bailey’s three-year term came to a close. Ms. Bailey has been a Board member since 2002 and was Vice-Chair of St. John's Rehab Foundation from 2003 to June 2005.

Under Ms. Bailey’s leadership, the hospital successfully received government approval to begin construction of the John C. and Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Ambulatory Care. The Board, management and staff of St. John’s Rehab thank Ms. Bailey for her commitment and dedication and are pleased that she will remain on the Board as a Director.

On Monday, the Board also elected Caroline Pinto as Vice-Chair. Ms. Pinto is a principal founder of Counsel Public Affairs Inc. and originally joined the Board of Directors in 2008.
