Resignation of Christine Fitzgerald from CIHR

Departure of Christine Fitzgerald

It is with sincere regret that I announce the resignation of Christine Fitzgerald, CIHR’s Executive Vice-President, effective May 2nd, 2012. Christine reminded me that this summer will mark her 10th anniversary at CIHR, and that she has remained in the role longer than she originally intended. I know that I speak for all of us at CIHR when I say that I have greatly benefited from working with Christine since my appointment in 2008 and that I shall miss her keen strategic abilities and indefatigable spirit.

Christine has been an iconic figure at CIHR since its inception, having joined as Vice-President, Corporate Affairs, in 2002, when she helped shape the organization in fundamental ways. In 2005 she was promoted to Executive Vice-President, to reflect the breadth of her responsibilities. There are few areas at CIHR for which she was not, at some time over the past ten years, responsible. Christine’s accomplishments in that time are too numerous to mention but suffice it to say that she made a remarkable contribution, not only to CIHR, but also to Canadian health research policy.

I would ask you to join me in thanking Christine for her unflagging commitment and immense contribution to CIHR, and in wishing her all the best for the future. A farewell event will be organized to take place next year, at which staff will have the opportunity to say their goodbyes.

Christine’s departure will create a significant leadership void at CIHR that will be hard to fill.  Early in the new year we will start the process to identify a successor.
