Women's Knowledge and Attitudes regarding HIV/STDs and Contraception in Portsmouth, Dominica: A Qualitative Study of Women and their Sexual Decision-making
Abstract
Objectives: This research explores the gap between women's knowledge of HIV/AIDS and behavior change in Dominica.Methods: This qualitative study used the individual-interview method to examine perceptions regarding HIV/STDs and contraception.
Results: Almost all of the respondents were aware of the heterosexual nature of AIDS, but seemed unaware of other potential modes of transmission. Many women do not use family planning.
Conclusions: There is a need to intervene in the advancing HIV/AIDS epidemic at the level of behavioral norms and to empower women to protect themselves and their families. [To view this article, please download the PDF.]
