Our Greatest Resources are Under Attack: The Healthcare Worker Violence Epidemic
Dr. Michael Heenan President and Chief Executive Officer of the St. Joseph’s Health System
Across Canada, healthcare workers are assaulted on the job every day. In 2019, a government report shared that 61% of nurses, 74% of paramedics and 89% of personal support workers are subject to harassment, racism, and physical abuse annually. Recent reports suggest it continues to rise. And while private businesses can refuse service if a customer abuses staff, we can’t deny patient care. A candid conversation about the unsafe working environments and the moral dilemma of our physicians and staff face is needed to implement a long-term, sustainable plan to address declining morale, increasing staff turnover, and diminishing clinical outcomes.
