FACTS AND STATS

ModernHealthcare's fourth annual report on the U.S. healthcare workforce includes the following statistics:

  • As of December 2000, the top staff vacancy was RNs (8.5%), followed next by nursing assistants (7.6%), and LPNs (7.3%).
  • Hospital pharmacists are also in demand: 6.2% of positions are vacant, and it is taking longer to fill them (6.5 months in 2005, versus 5.3 months in 2004).
  • Thirty percent of active physicians are older than 55 years of age.
  • Despite some "hazy" numbers, "most experts now agree that the U.S. is facing a shortage of physicians that may stretch well into the next couple of decades."
