Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) is inventing the future of health care.
Its main aims are to understand and prevent disease, and develop treatments that enhance and extend life.

Profile

  • Sunnybrook Research Institute is a research and teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto.
  • Research spans two Toronto-based campuses: Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Holland Musculoskeletal Centre.
  • Total research funding at SRI has more than doubled since 1998, and the institute is now ranked second among all University of
  • Toronto-affiliated research institutes in external funding.
  • SRI scientists are conducting more than $100 million in research.
  • Research space at the Sunnybrook campus comprises 250,000 square feet; soon to be added is another 170,000 square feet.

People

  • SRI has 210 scientists and clinician-scientists.
  • Working with SRI scientists are 264 research associates, engineers, physicists and technicians.
  • All scientists at SRI teach at the University of Toronto, within the faculty of medicine.
  • Training with SRI scientists are 149 postdoctoral fellows, 175 graduate students and 62 undergraduate students.
  • Nine SRI researchers hold Canada Research Chairs, the most prestigious award the federal government grants.

There are five disciplines:

  1. clinical epidemiology
  2. clinical integrative biology
  3. combined health services sciences
  4. imaging
  5. molecular and cellular biology

Each scientist aligns with a discipline and one of seven programs:

  1. Brain sciences
  2. Holland musculoskeletal
  3. Odette cancer
  4. Schulich heart
  5. Trauma, emergency and critical care
  6. Veterans and community
  7. Women and babies

Large-Scale Capital Projects

  • SRI’s four largest capital projects, funded mainly by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, have a total project value of $200 million and are unique in Canada:
  • Centre for Research in Image-Guided Therapeutics
  • Breast Cancer Research Centre
  • Imaging Research Centre for Cardiac Intervention
  • Toronto Angiogenesis Research Centre
