Terry Sullivan
Major Achievements in the Last Five Years

  • At the turn of the century Ontario was sending patients to the U.S. for radiation treatment. Today, Ontario is now the national leader in wait times reductions; has added close to 30 new radiation machines; and has grown the number of regional cancer centers from 8 to 14.
  • Surgical Wait times have fallen more than 35% and CCO provides the electronic support to the organized wait time efforts across all surgical and imaging areas in Ontario, not limited to cancer.
  • CCO is a global leader in the introduction of standardized electronic pathology reports and the capture of cancer stage has grown steadily in the last few years, reaching more than 90% in our large cancer hospitals and more than 70% in all hospitals across Ontario.
  • Last year. Ontario screened the one millionth woman. Today, close to 70% of women in Ontario are now having regular mammography.
  • CCO, with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, launched the first colorectal screening program in Canada. Participation in this screening program (using occult blood in stool) has doubled since the launch of the program. This platform is also the basis for developing and integrated electronic tool to support physicians with all organized cancer screening activity.
  • CCO now has a high quality surgical oncology program producing demonstrable improvements in lung, esophagus, breast, prostate and colorectal surgery which are reported publicly and annually on the Cancer System Quality Index.
  • In each of the 14 LHINs or regions, Ontario now has a primary care leader supporting increased screening activity and a palliative care leader to work towards better symptom management and care of end of life patients.
  • In the last 5 years, CCO has twice been recognized by the Ontario Hospital Association for innovations and improvements in cancer services across the patient journey; twice recognized by the Canadian Information and Productivity Awards for health information solutions including the highest recognition. In addition, the Institute of Public Administration of Canada has recognized CCO for its work on wait times. CCO was also recognized as the best project implementation team With Clytan for the introduction of Colon Cancer Check.  CCO was also singled out by the European Observatory of Health Systems as providing the exemplary Canadian example of chronic disease management.

Why is Dr. Sullivan Stepping Down?
Dr. Sullivan has decided to step down as CEO of Cancer Care Ontario after ten years of leadership, close to seven in the CEO’s chair. This is a good run of time for any CEO and he has achieved the objectives he set out for the organization. Dr. Sullivan will continue to lead CCO in order to allow for the orderly recruitment and transition of a new leader
