A message from Terry Sullivan:
We at CCO have spent the last decade improving cancer care in Ontario. With leadership from a talented and high quality volunteer Board and a supportive provincial government, we have achieved enormous results. This has been on behalf of cancer patients and their families who are expecting improved access and quality of service in Ontario. We have achieved many firsts – better access, stronger preventive health services, higher quality care, and transparent performance reporting. We have also achieved a transformation that has been rapid, evidence-based and focused on patients and their needs. I anticipate more of the same in the future along with tremendous new opportunities to create value with the creation of the Ontario Renal Network and the government’s quality agenda as enunciated in the recent throne speech and budget 2010.
I am entering my tenth year at Cancer Care Ontario and I have cherished every minute of it. I have accomplished what I came here to do and it’s time for a new leader to take the organization to new heights. For these reasons, and after much consideration, I have advised the CCO Board that it is my intention to step down as CEO of Cancer Care Ontario and I have requested them to strike a search committee to recruit a new Chief Executive Officer who will provide the organization with continuing leadership in the coming decade.
I believe the organization is strong; the base of talent is deep. CCO is well positioned to continue to make great strides on behalf of all Ontario patients. I will work closely with the Board and our executive team during this transition to ensure our culture of excellence is maintained. I have also informed the Board that, while it is my intention to leave by the end of the fiscal year, I will adjust my departure time in the next 12 months according to the organization’s requirements in order to allow for the orderly recruitment and transition of a new leader.
I am enormously proud of the work we have done to improve cancer care in this Province and I will watch with admiration in the future as CCO continues to demonstrate what a high performing, public sector agency can accomplish.
With thanks,
Terry

A message from Ratan Ralliaram, Interim Chair:
On behalf of the Board of Cancer Care Ontario, I would like to advise all CCO staff that the CCO Board of Directors has accepted, with regret, Dr. Sullivan’s intention to step down as CEO. This decision was made by Dr. Sullivan according to a planned timeline discussed between him and the Board two years ago.
Dr. Sullivan has steered CCO through some important and exciting developments which have spurred CCO toward the high performing public agency it has become. In the last five years, Ontario has become the leader in reducing radiation and surgical wait times across Canada. CCO has focused on measured and improved performance in a range of surgical specialties, and CCO has become a model of public reporting on cancer service quality across the continuum of care and every region of Ontario. In addition, Ontario led the country in the introduction of colorectal screening activity, and has put an important stake in the ground to improve primary care activity in cancer preventive services and palliative care. These, as well as many other accomplishments, are a tribute to Dr. Sullivan’s leadership and vision as well as the skills, devotion and hard work of all of those who work at CCO and in cancer care across the province.
Our board has begun the process for recruitment of a top executive with depth of experience in health services, management and research. Dr. Sullivan has agreed to remain as CEO for up to twelve months in order to allow for the orderly recruitment and transition of a new leader. Through Dr. Sullivan and the executive team I commit to keeping staff apprised of developments in this regard.
Sincerely,
Ratan Ralliaram
Interim Board Chair, Cancer Care Ontario
