Hospital executives are spending more time than ever addressing
patient safety. According to an online survey of 140 members of the
Health Management Academy representing 79 of the U.S. largest
health systems:
- Sixty-four per cent of all executive groups (CEOs, CFOs, CMOs,
and CNOs) rated patient safety as the top priority (also for CEOs
at 46 %) over financial health, patient satisfaction, information
technology, and physician loyalty.
- Forty-six per cent spend more than 25% of their time on patient
safety.
- Establishing a patient-safety culture was the top priority - at
47% ("nothing else was even close").
- According to 90% of the surveyed executives, their organizations increased spending on patient safety from 2004 to 2005.
