The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in Japan plans to
create a "NHIN" that lets hospitals throughout the country share
patient information in an effort to save money and make it easier
for patients to seek second opinions. One pilot will send patient
discharge data from hospitals to rehabilitation centers and another
links maternity clinics to four hospitals. After completion of the
pilots, the Japanese Association of Healthcare Information Systems
Industry will determine the standard format for data
exchanges.
