The US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are intensifying pressure on hospitals to adopt electronic prescribing systems. Beginning this year, CMS will offer bonuses to providers who use e-prescribing systems for their Medicare patients, and by 2012 will invoke penalties on providers that do not use compliant e-prescribing systems. Currently, only 6% of physicians have some form of e-prescribing capability compared to 75% of pharmacies.
