IN THE USA. . . . all the bright, ambitious immigrants . . . are leaving the United States and returning home, especially to India and China. That is the topic of a report, "America's Loss Is the World's Gain" (PDF) from the Kauffman Foundation. In the last two decades, 50,000 immigrants left the United States and returned to India and China. In the next five years, researchers project that 100,000 more will make the return trip. Here's Why: Economics, is the main engine of the shift. Researchers surveyed 1,203 Indian and Chinese workers who had studied or worked in the United States for a year or more before returning home. Growing demand for their skills and shining career opportunities back home were cited by 87 percent of the Chinese and 79 percent of the Indians as the major professional reason for returning. Most also cited the lure of being close to family and friends. | MacLean's suggests: Given Canada's strength, this may be our time to pull out of America's shadow. Yet, developing countries still serve as a readily available source of trained nurses for developed countries in Europe, North America and parts of Oceania and According to CIHI, the Percent of Physicians in Canada Who Are International Medical Graduates (IMGs), by Province and Territory, 1977, 1987, 1997, 2007(PDF) has been on the decrease since 1977.

Canadian Healthcare: Time to Plan for the Providers
Michael Decter
Abstract:
No issue will have as profound an effect on the future of
healthcare services in Canada as how well, or poorly, we plan and
manage our health human resources. If we fail as a nation to train
the providers we need and to retain sufficient numbers of them
within the health system, little else will matter. While long-term,
sustainable financing is essential to quality healthcare services,
it is not sufficient. If we are short of nurses and then add money
to the health system, we get rapid growth in nursing pay rather
than more nurses.
