Maximizing Health Human Resources: Valuing Unregulated Health Workers, Highlights of the 2009 Pan-Canadian Symposium (PDF). This report, funded by the Government of Canada's Foreign Credential Recognition Program, identifies five priority issues, shared across disciplines, jurisdictions and practice settings, and gives a sense of strategic direction to address these issues. Health-care stakeholders can build on this momentum and seek solutions that will ensure safe care.

Does your organization promote quality of worklife? What steps is your organization taking towards improving the health of the healthcare work environment? If you have an improvement story to share, we want to hear about it! The QWQHC invites you to submit a brief proposal to present at a concurrent session and/or to participate in an initiatives showcase at its 4th annual Summit. As a complement to the sessions, the showcase is an excellent opportunity to discuss projects or initiatives with colleagues from the field and to share experiences and resources. To learn more about the Summit, visit last year's post-Summit site: www.f2fe.com/qwqhc/2009

Interactive concurrent sessions are 90 minutes in length and the showcase will remain accessible to participants throughout the Summit.
To enter a submission, please go to: www.f2fe.com/qwqhc2010-callforsubmissions. Deadline to submit an abstract is October 13, 2009.

Raising the Bar for People Practices: Helping All Health Organizations Become "Preferred Employers"
Graham S. Lowe

Abstract:
There is a growing consensus that Canada's health system employers must do more to support and develop their staff within healthy and positive work environments. Human resources are the single largest budget line in any healthcare organization. But employees are not costs; rather, they must be viewed by managers, boards and governments as the core assets of the system. Leadership in health human resources means investing in people, supporting them to deliver excellent patient care and related services and developing their capabilities for the long-term.

Wrestling with Workload Woes
Judith MacBride-King

Abstract:
Work overload takes its toll on organizations, not just on individuals. Organizations are feeling the pain in very costly ways-higher rates of absenteeism and errors, diminished innovative capability, lower employee morale and job satisfaction, and skyrocketing health benefit and long-term disability costs.
