Barrie urologist suspended by College of Physicians

Dr. Joseph Antonia Zadra just flushed away three months as a urologist.
The Barrie doctor was suspended for three months by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario April 17. He is also required to pay $5,000 in costs to the college and, at his own expense, participate and complete instruction in medical ethics and record-keeping courses.
He will also need to retain a clinical supervisor for six months after resuming his practice. Again, Zadra will cover the cost.
Zadra, a staff urologist at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, was found by the college’s disciplinary committee to have engaged in “disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional” conduct on several occasions.
In March 2014, the college received a complaint indicating Zadra had been dictating operative reports that did not accurately reflect the work completed. The college says no patient harm was reported as a result of the practice.
In its review of the matter, RVH found Zadra inaccurately recorded the names of certain procedures he performed.
An investigation by the college found that while Zadra’s practice did not cause injury, some planned or proposed procedures could have exposed patients to harm.
“In one case of a circumcision of an eight-year-old boy, Dr. Zadra failed to dictate issues that should have been documented, such as pre- and post-operative urine stream,” the college’s disciplinary said in its ruling. “In another case, Dr. Zadra dictated a procedure of ‘hernia repair’ … that did not correspond to the operating room nurses’ suture count.”
The description of procedures performed was inaccurate on several patient charts, leading to inaccurate or questionable claims submissions to OHIP.
