Dr. Tim Rutledge appointed as new President and CEO, Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital

Toronto, ON – Today, the board of directors for the health-care network bringing together Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital announced the appointment of Dr. Tim Rutledge as its new president and CEO, effective March 19, 2018.

“A well-respected physician and hospital CEO, Dr. Rutledge comes to the new network with a strong understanding of the opportunities ahead to continuously improve care for our patients and build a vision for our organization. After an international search, it was clear that Dr. Rutledge is the leader to drive us forward. His health-care management experience combined with a passion for the people and communities we serve set him apart,” said Tom Woods, chair of the board.

One of Dr. Rutledge’s early priorities will be to work closely with the board, the three foundations, donors, clinicians, researchers and staff across the network, plus its many partners, to develop the network’s first strategic plan – building on the strengths of the three legacy sites and shaping the priorities for what is now Canada’s largest Catholic health-care provider.

Dr. Rutledge is currently at North York General Hospital where he has been president and CEO for the past seven years. A physician trained in emergency medicine, Dr. Rutledge also served as NYGH‘s vice-president of Medical Affairs, director of Education and chief of Emergency Services. At the University of Toronto, he is an associate professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. He is also regularly called on by the province and other health system partners to sit on advisory tables, act as an investigator and chair health councils.

Mr. Woods thanked the CEO Selection Committee, made up of board members, staff and clinicians as well as all of those who provided input on the qualities needed for the CEO position.

He also recognized and thanked Dr. Bob Howard for his exceptional leadership as president and CEO of St. Michael’s Hospital since 2009 and as interim president and CEO of the new health network since its integration on Aug. 1, 2017.

About our network:

As Catholic health-care organizations, Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospitalshare a common mission and values centred around caring for the patient, especially those who experience marginalization and disadvantage. Together we will enhance access and improve quality for everyone we care for through a health network that offers a full spectrum of primary care, secondary community care, tertiary and quaternary care and post-acute through rehabilitation, palliative care and long–term care.

Our partnership will also further develop our academic and research missions and ability to spread innovation and new knowledge to the care we provide. We will do this through a more comprehensive experience for our learners in clinical placements and rotations which will include exposure to community-based, critical care and post-acute care environments. We will generate ground-breaking, high quality research that can be translated into improved care and improved outcomes for our patients in Toronto and across the globe. We will also establish a significant advocacy role for our new health network within the City of Toronto and Toronto Central LHIN for community population health, specifically focused on greater access to housing, nutrition and mental health services for the marginalized populations served.

Over the next year, the new network will launch a strategic planning consultation to chart a path forward for care, research and education. It will also undertake a branding effort to provide a new name for the network.
