The federal government says it is moving quickly to strengthen controls on several synthetic opioids and precursor chemicals linked to Canada’s illegal drug supply.
Health Minister Marjorie Michel announced Tuesday that temporary controls will be placed on three substances under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act beginning June 5, 2026.
The substances include synthetic opioids spirobrorphine and spirochlorphine, along with precursor chemical R 29676. The controls will remain in place for one year.
The government says the move is intended to help law enforcement and border officials intercept substances linked to organized crime and illegal drug production.
