Canada's state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital opens at St. John's
Toronto, February 13, 2012 – Project work has been completed on Canada’s state-of-the-art St. John’s Rehabilitation Hospital and Ambulatory Care Centre located in north east Toronto. This undertaking involved the 7,804 sm expansion and renovation of an existing “community centre of excellence in rehabilitation” and the construction of a new outpatient services facility: the John C. and Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Ambulatory Care.
The project features enhanced ambulatory care and treatment facilities, including a hydro-therapy pool, expanded inpatient and research facilities, administration, main entry, front-of-house waiting areas, accessible parking and expanded therapy gardens. The hospital has continued the exploration of creating simple “shoebox” flexible and adaptable ambulatory space that provides a robust “future-proofing” layout for health environments. It concentrates primary circulation along the exterior walls of the building using single-loaded corridors in an L-shaped arrangement, while also borrowing daylight and views to all occupied areas. The design continues to incorporate generous and prominent stairs to encourage those who can to “ambulate.”
The master plan and new building expansion reinforces the hospital’s image within the community and integrates the new building seamlessly within an existing beautiful and mature landscaping. The redevelopment will provide advanced treatment space, allowing the hospital to care for 50,000 outpatient visits each year.
The design for St. John’s Rehabilitation Hospital helps to promote the organization’s vision to be at the forefront of rehabilitation care and to rebuild the lives of adults recovering from life-changing illness or injury by involving them in individualized rehabilitation programs focused on the whole person. One of the initiatives introduced by St. John’s is “pre-hab” versus “rehab”, which deals with patients pre-surgery so that they will be healthier on the recovery side of a medical event.
St. John’s is dedicated to providing innovative care that focuses on physical, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual needs. This “whole person” approach to rehabilitation promises to provide excellence in care and service with a focus on meeting individual needs.
The $30M project was designed by Farrow Partnership and Montgomery Sisam Architects.
