After a decade spent working in software development, I decided to quit and become a nurse. I'd had enough of corporate-ladder-climbing and solo technical work; I wanted to help people, and health care felt like the best way to do it. So, in 2021, at the age of 37, I enrolled in nursing school. After graduating in 2024, I worked in general care in a hospital before taking a job at an in-patient treatment facility for substance use. I loved watching people overcome those challenges to get their lives back. I was in long-term recovery myself, so I knew exactly what that felt like.

What I didn't love was America's soul-sucking, for-profit health-care system. It's been broken for a long time: people avoid primary-care visits, then show up in the ER once they get really sick.
