Associated Medical Services Announces the AMS Phoenix Fellowships (2012/13)

January 27, 2012 (Toronto, ON) - Applications are now being accepted for the new AMS Phoenix Fellowships. These prestigious awards will be targeted to individuals with new and imaginative ideas for innovative clinical practice, education or research that are likely to have direct and meaningful impact on how health professionals develop and sustain their abilities to provide compassionate care.

Focus: Each year, the AMS will select a new group of Phoenix Fellows with the intent of building a cohort of champions to advance the goals of the Phoenix Project. In their roles as clinicians, educators, or researchers, they will serve as role models for delivering compassionate healthcare. The focus will be on developing creative strategies to advance humane, compassionate, person-centred care and to understand and address the hidden curricula that can work against such care in some learning and practice environments. In 2012, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit proposals that will advance the first goal of the AMS Phoenix Project: To identify and support champions for caring relationships, through the development of healthcare professionals who will model compassionate care in their everyday work.

Eligibility & Terms: The competition is open to individuals affiliated with any one of the Faculties/Schools of Medicine or Faculties/Schools of Nursing in Ontario including hospitals and healthcare institutions. Preference will be given to applicants with an existing profile in advancing how health professionals develop and sustain compassionate care for patients and the population at large. The AMS will provide successful applicants with $25,000 for a one-year period (2012/13) with the possibility of renewal for one additional term based on accomplishments in the first year. The AMS funds must be matched by the Fellow’s home institution (university, college, hospital) to guarantee funding for the Fellow’s activities equivalent to $50,000/year.

To Apply: Applications will be evaluated using a two-staged process. For Stage 1, applicants are required to submit a letter of intent (maximum length 2 pages), along with a copy of their curriculum vitae (maximum length 5 pages) no later than Friday, March 2, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. Finalists will be notified by Friday, March 30, 2012 whether they will be invited to participate in Stage 2 and will be asked to prepare a more detailed description of their proposed Fellowship.
