Montreal, February 15, 2012 – What makes a good health system leader? It's a complex mix of many factors but the use of sound evidence is key. The Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) recognizes the critical importance of this and today proudly presents this year’s Excellence through Evidence Award to Dr. Leslie Levin.
Dr. Levin is Head of Health Quality Ontario’s Medical Advisory Secretariat, a professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto and a senior consultant in medical oncology at the Princess Margaret Hospital.
According to CHSRF President, Maureen O’Neil, “Dr. Levin has been a leader in academia, government, and healthcare administration. He is experienced in clinical and wet-bench research and has advised governments and funding agencies on evidence-based policy decision-making here and abroad. In addition, he has been influential in forging academic collaborations at many levels.”
Dr. Levin was instrumental in creating the Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee. He is also the founding Chief Scientific Officer of the MaRS Discovery District’s Excellence in Clinical Innovation and Technology Evaluation.
As the former Vice-President of Cancer Care Ontario, Dr. Levin initiated their evidence-based cancer guidelines and is responsible for creating a unique evidence-based provincial cancer drug program.
"I am greatly honoured by this award,” says Dr. Levin. “I share this recognition with my colleagues at the Medical Advisory Secretariat, the members of Ontario's Health Technology Advisory Committee and our extensive network of academic and scientific partners. The Government of Ontario should also be commended for its strong commitment to evidence-based patient care. This collaborative effort has contributed to making Ontario a global leader in medical technology assessment, and I am proud to be a part of it."
The Excellence through Evidence Award recognizes a health services leader who has successfully implemented evidence-informed innovations in care and service delivery and provides an honorarium of $15,000 to be used to inspire similar innovation across Canada.
The award will be presented by Ms O’Neil at 12:10 pm at the Hotel Omni Mont-Royal in Montreal, 1050 Sherbrooke Street during the sixth annual CHSRF CEO Forum—a gathering of health system leaders from across Canada. This year they have gathered around the theme of Driving Innovation: Reinventing Ambulatory and Community Care.
The Canadian Health Services Research Foundation is an independent not-for-profit corporation dedicated to accelerating healthcare improvement and transformation for Canadians and is funded through an agreement with the Government of Canada. We collaborate with governments, policy-makers, and health system leaders to convert evidence and innovative practices into actionable policies, programs, tools and leadership development.
