Provincial Health Services Authority runs BC Cancer Agency, B.C. Children’s Hospital
The five highest-paid health authority employees in B.C. all worked for the Provincial Health Services Authority, according to The Vancouver Sun’s exclusive database of public-sector salaries.
While five of the province’s six health authorities cover specific geographic areas, the PHSA runs a number of institutions that serve the whole province, such as B.C. Children’s Hospital and the BC Cancer Agency.
All three of the top earners no longer work for the PHSA.
John Shepherd, a hematologist at the BC Cancer Agency, is the highest-paid health authority employee in B.C., with a total remuneration in the 2013/14 fiscal year of $516,928. That’s a significant increase from the year before, when Shepherd earned $406,767. According to the PHSA, Shepherd retired in 2013/14 and so his pay includes a number of one-time retirement benefits and payouts.
Max Coppes, former president of the BC Cancer Agency, is the second-highest paid health authority employee at $504,659. Coppes resigned his position in October.
Ivo Olivotto, former vice-president of radiation therapy at the BC Cancer Agency, is third at $499,903. Olivotto is now a professor and head of radiation oncology at the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute at the University of Calgary.
