Janet Davidson, the former deputy minister of health, was the highest paid Alberta government employee in 2015.

Davidson, who left her post in September 2015, was paid $457,661 in base salary and another $81,487 in cash benefits.

Davidson's compensation information was part of the disclosure of salaries of Alberta government employees making more than $104,754 in the 2015 calendar year.

Health Minister Sarah Hoffman said Davidson's compensation came to her attention a year ago when she was reviewing costs in her ministry. 

"The salary of the current deputy minister does not reflect the compensation that the previous deputy minister received," Hoffman said. 

"I think you can read into that what you will, but we want to make sure that our costs are in line and appropriate when it comes to those in the public service as well as those working through the agencies, boards and commissions to serve the public."

Carl Amhrein is not listed on the government of Alberta sunshine list. His salary at the U of A was $498,551 in 2015. 

Amhrein became deputy minister of health in August 2015. Alberta Health said his salary is around $330,000, an amount similar to what other deputy ministers are paid. 

The second-highest earner in 2015 was Richard Dicerni, the recently-retired deputy minister of executive council. He earned $$368,913 last year. He received no additional cash benefits.
