Dennis Giokas
Dennis Giokas, Chief Technology Officer, Canada Health Infoway
Dennis is responsible for four corporate priorities: the definition of health information and communications technology solutions, advice on innovative and disruptive health information technology, Infoway’s International Advisory Services, and health system use (secondary use of data). He oversees Infoway’s new digital health investment areas and the tracking, evaluation and promotion of enabling technology and standards innovations. He is also responsible for international standards activities, particularly with regard to IHTSDO and HL7.
Dennis has more than 30 years’ experience in information management and technology. He has consulted on IT strategy in a number of industries including healthcare, financial services, insurance and energy services.
He holds two patents for software innovations and one in industrial design. He has a master’s degree in computer science from Boston University.
Presentation Topic: Opportunities and Challenges for Big Data in Healthcare
Big Data. Everyone is talking about it. So called big data are a new input for analytics. Analytics yield insights which then become part of informed decision making. One industry where this is quite evident and holds a lot of promise for its economic value is healthcare. This session will define big data and the factors contributing to this trend. The session will then focus on its use in health and some considerations including economics, governance and strategies that are critical for those embarking on a big data program in their organization.
