Abstract
This article was delivered as a paper to the Small Hospitals Session of the annual Ontario Hospital Association Convention in November 1999. It offers a potential positive outlook for non-urban communities to obtain essential healthcare services in response to local needs without necessarily having to depend on urban centres to provide them. One hospital corporation - there may be others - is pursuing how it can best meet local needs with not only primary and secondary care, but also through more specialized forms of care that its community now has to seek in urban centres.
