Abstract
The following is adapted from a presentation by Raymond Grady, President and CEO of Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Illinois, to the National Summit on the Future of Education and Practice in Health Management and Policy in Orlando, Florida, in February 2001.
The mandate and challenge of increasing diversity in healthcare management": What does this really imply? The word mandate suggests that there is a sense of urgency in addressing this issue. The word challenge suggests that there is clearly a leadership opportunity. The mandate is born out of a patience that has existed too long in responding to the changing demographics of the workplace and our communities - patience that if allowed to exist will erode the essence of diversity because it is easy to drift back towards the mainstream.
