In these days of electronic storage of personal information, and the potentially easy accessibility to same, not surprisingly concerns have arisen over the electronic transfer of personal information and the protection of confidentiality. These concerns spill over into the healthcare system with its electronic storage of personal medical information, and consequently, the need to protect patient confidentiality by health professionals and their support staff. The Ontario government has put forth a draft Privacy of Personal Information Act, 2002 ("PPIA"), which is an attempt to reach a compromise between the competing interests of privacy as a human right, and the reasonable use of personal information by organizations to deliver goods and services to the public.
