New Vice President at the Canadian Institute for Health Information

Helen Angus was appointed to the position of Vice President of Research and Analysis at the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), effective December 1, 2008. Ms. Angus has more than 20 years of experience working in the healthcare system, the last seven of which were with Cancer Care Ontario (CCO). She most recently served as the vice president of planning and strategic implementation, but over the years her CCO responsibilities included the Cancer Quality Council, system-level strategy development and provincial planning and leadership for the first cancer system quality index. Ms. Angus also worked for Ontario's Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care on the Trillium Drug program and the Long-Term Care Redevelopment Project.

Philippe Couillard Appointed Senior Fellow in Health Law at McGill

McGill University is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Philippe Couillard as Senior Fellow in Health Law, effective since January 1, 2009. In his new role, Dr. Couillard will join the McGill Research Group on Health and Law, the focal point for interdisciplinary teaching and research in health, law and public policy at McGill. Dr. Couillard's mandate will include coordinating reflection and discussion in these areas, considering both national and international perspectives. He will also participate in teaching, special lectures and research activities related to health and law.

Dr. Couillard was Quebec's Minister of Health and Social Services from April 2003 to June 2008. Professor in the Université de Sherbrooke's Faculty of Medicine from 1996 to 2003, he also served as head surgeon and director of the Surgery Department at the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke from 2000 to 2003. He is co-founder of a neurosurgery service in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where he worked from 1992 to 1996. Prior to that, he was head of the Department of Neurosurgery at St-Luc Hospital in Montreal from 1989 to 1992. Since October 1, 2008, he has been a partner with Persistence Capital Partners in Montreal.

Dr. Couillard was also the Canadian representative on the Board of Directors of the Société de neurochirurgie de langue française from 1999 to 2003, as well as a member of the Council and of the Health and Public Policy Committee of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada from 2000 to 2003. He obtained a doctorate degree in Medicine in 1979, as well as a degree in Neurosurgery from the Université de Montréal, a specialist certificate from the Collège des médecins du Québec and a specialist certificate from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1985.

New Leadership Takes Helm of Health Sciences Research at McGill

McGill has announced three strategic leadership appointments in the Faculty of Medicine to set the course for continued excellence in health sciences research and discovery.

Dr. Rémi Quirion, Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research's Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction, as well as of the Douglas Mental Health University Institute Research Centre, is appointed to the newly created position of Vice-Dean for Science and Strategic Initiatives and Senior University Advisor on Health Sciences Research at McGill. Supporting Dr. Quirion are Dr. Marianna Newkirk, the Faculty of Medicine's new Associate Dean of Research, and Dr. Elaine Davis, in the newly created position of Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies.

As Vice-Dean for Science and Strategic Initiatives and Senior University Advisor on Health Sciences Research, Dr. Quirion will be lead ambassador for the research enterprise of the Faculty of Medicine and will advise the Faculty on issues spanning the full spectrum of the life sciences. Also a full professor in McGill's Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Quirion is renowned as a distinguished, innovative neuroscientist, educator and science administrator. One of the most highly cited neuroscientists in the world, he is an international expert in his field, which includes aging and Alzheimer's disease as well as central nervous system function. Dr. Quirion's appointment begins April 1, 2009.

In her role as the new Associate Dean of Research, Dr. Newkirk will provide critical support to Dr. Quirion on all matters related to funding agencies and special funding initiatives. She will also oversee the grant submission process for all Faculty of Medicine researchers. Dr. Newkirk has been an esteemed member of the Faculty of Medicine for more than 20 years, focusing her work on autoimmunity in relation to rheumatic disease. Currently associate professor in McGill's Department of Medicine, she is also co-founder and elected President of Immunology Montreal.

In the newly created position of Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr. Davis will be responsible for the creation of the overall structure and processes to meet the Faculty's graduate and postdoctoral needs, in tandem with the requirements of the Graduate Postdoctoral Studies Office. A tenured associate professor in McGill's Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, and a Canada Research Chair, she will also participate in the creation of new graduate programs. Prior to joining McGill in 2002, Dr. Davis was an assistant professor in the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

KGH Announces New President and CEO

The Kingston General Hospital Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Leslee J. Thompson as the hospital's new President and Chief Executive Officer effective February 16, 2009.

Ms. Thompson brings extensive healthcare industry experience in both the public and private sectors to this important leadership role. She is currently Vice President, Health System Strategies with Medtronic of Canada, a position with national responsibilities. Medtronic is a global medical devices company.

Ms. Thompson's senior experience in healthcare includes serving as Vice President, Cancer System Integration and Performance with Cancer Care Ontario. In this position she was responsible for bringing about the integration of cancer centres and hospitals provincewide, including the integration of the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at KGH. She has also held senior executive roles in several teaching hospitals, including Chief Operating Officer of Sunnybrook and Women's Health Sciences Centre, Vice President/Chief Operating Officer of Toronto Western Hospital at University Health Network and Senior Operating Officer with the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton's Capital Health Authority.

Ms. Thompson started her career as a critical care nurse. She is a graduate of the School of Nursing at Queen's University and holds a Master of Science degree in Nursing from University of Toronto and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario.

South West Local Health Integration Network Announces New Chief Executive Officer

Board Chair Norm Gamble recently announced the appointment of Michael Barrett as Chief Executive Officer of the South West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).

Barrett had been acting CEO since August 2008, when the position became vacant. Prior to becoming CEO, he was the Senior Director, Performance, Contract and Allocation at the South West LHIN since January 2007. His previous experience in the healthcare sector is extensive, having held positions as Regional Leader and Business Manager at London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care in London, and as Regional Manager of Planning and Support with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

Barrett is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, where he obtained a master's degree in Public Administration. As a life-long resident of London, he truly understands the South West LHIN, the challenges presented by its vast geography and the need to ensure that both urban and rural populations have access to a high-quality healthcare system.

Local Pediatric Surgeon Appointed President of McMaster Children's Hospital

Dr. Peter Fitzgerald has been appointed President of McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH). Dr. Fitzgerald has been on staff at MCH for 16 years, and is currently the hospital's Medical Director as well as Chief of Pediatric Surgery. He assumed his new role in January, succeeding Dr. Peter Steer, who is leaving Hamilton to become CEO of a new children's hospital in Brisbane, Australia.

Dr. Fitzgerald received a master's degree in Psychology at the University of Ottawa before enrolling in medical school at McMaster University. He completed his residency in general surgery at McMaster, and then a fellowship in paediatric general surgery at Dalhousie University and Izaak Walton Killam Children's Hospital in Halifax.

Over the years, Dr. Fitzgerald has held a variety of positions at MCH, including Unit Director of the Paediatric Surgical Unit (1993-1999), Co-Principal Investigator of the Paediatric Oncology Group (1994-2004) and Co-Chair of the MCH Program Council (2002 - present). He is also a professor in McMaster's Faculty of Health Sciences, where he has made significant contributions to undergraduate surgical education, particularly in the development of evaluation standards.

Dr. Fitzgerald has a national and international reputation for his innovative work and leadership in minimal access (keyhole) surgery and reconstructive chest wall surgery. As a researcher, he has published 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals and made numerous presentations at medical conferences. From 2002 to 2007, he was Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Association of Paediatric Surgeons. In 2004, Hamilton Health Sciences paid special tribute to his achievements and commitment by presenting him with its prestigious Cornerstone Award.

Appointment of the Director of the Centre for Patient Safety

The President and CEO of the Hospital for Sick Children, Mary Jo Haddad, the President and CEO of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Barry McLellan, and the Dean of Medicine, Catharine Whiteside, recently announced that Dr. Kaveh Shojania has been appointed as the inaugural Director of the new University of Toronto Centre for Patient Safety.

The Centre was created through partnership between the two lead hospitals, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Hospital for Sick Children, and the Faculty of Medicine. It will foster novel research and education projects aimed at improving patient safety both locally and internationally. The Centre will provide a focus for collaboration across the Toronto Academic Health Science Network, including all the affiliated hospitals and all health science and related programs at the university.

Dr. Shojania is appointed in the Department of Medicine and holds a Canada Research Chair in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement. He is recognized internationally for his work in these fields, especially his application of the principles of evidence-based medicine to the quality-of-care and patient safety agendas. He has published widely, including numerous peer-reviewed publications and, recently, a book for a general audience on patient safety, which has sold approximately 50,000 copies. Prior to his recent recruitment to the University of Toronto and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Shojania held faculty positions at the University of Ottawa and the University of California San Francisco.

Ida Goodreau Named CEO of LifeLabs Medical Laboratory Services

Borealis Infrastructure has announced the appointment of Ida Goodreau to the position of Chief Executive Officer of LifeLabs. In her new role, Ms. Goodreau will lead Canada's largest provider of community laboratory services in the delivery of more than 50 million laboratory tests to over 10 million Canadians and 20,000 physicians, annually.

Ms. Goodreau joins LifeLabs from Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), one of Canada's largest healthcare organizations, where since 2002 she was President and CEO. In this role, she was responsible for delivering complex health services to over 1.1 million people through a network of 21,000 employees, 13 hospitals and 9,000 acute, rehabilitation and residential beds.

Prior to joining VCH, Ms. Goodreau held senior leadership roles in several Canadian and international pulp and paper companies, including British Columbia's Fletcher Challenge Canada, where she led operational and market strategies that improved the company's global positioning. She began her career in Ontario as Vice-President, Human Resources for Union Gas, where she implemented world-class human resource practices.

A native of southwestern Ontario, Ms. Goodreau has an honours baccalaureate in Commerce and an MBA from the University of Windsor. She sits on a number of corporate boards and has led and supported the efforts of community, business and advisory groups focused on improving health services, including the Conference Board of Canada, Leaders' Roundtable on Health Human Resources, the Richard Ivey Health Sector Advisory Council, the Western Canada Health CEO Forum and the United Way.

Alberta Appoints New Chief Medical Officer of Health

Dr. André Corriveau, former Chief Medical Officer of Health for the Government of the Northwest Territories, has been appointed Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health.

The Chief Medical Officer of Health promotes and protects the health of Albertans under the authority of the Public Health Act. A member of the Alberta Health and Wellness executive, the Chief Medical Officer of Health reports directly to the Minister of Health and Wellness and advises on matters relating to the health of the population. The individual acts as a liaison between the government and Alberta Health Services, medical officers of health and executive officers in the administration of the Public Health Act.

Dr. Corriveau assumes the position of Chief Medical Officer of Health on March 23. Dr. Gerry Predy moved into a new position as Senior Medical Officer of Health and Senior Vice President with Alberta Health Services at the end of January.

Dr. Corriveau has been the NWT Chief Medical Officer of Health since 1998, responsible for health promotion programs, communicable and non-communicable disease control and prevention and health surveillance activities for the Department of Health and Social Services. He was the NWT Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer from 1995 to 1998, and previously served as the Regional Medical Health Officer for the Mackenzie Regional Health Service and Director of Professional Services for the Inuulitsivik Health Centre in the Hudson Bay region of Northern Quebec.

Dr. Corriveau completed his medical education at McGill University and holds a master's degree in Business Administration from Laval University.

Appointment of Chief Medical Health Officer, NWT

A new Chief Medical Health Officer was appointed for the Department of Health and Social Services in the Northwest Territories.

Dr. Cindy Orlaw will replace Dr. André Corriveau and assume responsibility as Chief Medical Health Officer. To assist with the transition, Dr. Corriveau will continue in an advisory role one day per week until July 2009.

Pat Campbell Named CEO of Echo

Pat Campbell, a highly respected senior healthcare leader, has been appointed the first Chief Executive Officer of Echo: Improving Women's Health in Ontario.

The announcement was made by Dr. Caroline Andrew, Board Chair of Echo.

Andrew says Campbell is "a highly engaged and dynamic leader who has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to improving women's health."

Echo was established as a new agency in 2007 by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. With its mandate to be the focal point and catalyst for women's health, Echo's role is far-reaching. The agency will:

  • collaborate with stakeholders to improve the health status of women;
  • reduce health inequities and promote the provision of accessible, appropriate, effective and equitable care for women;
  • conduct, fund and develop partnerships for policy-relevant research initiatives that fill knowledge gaps in women's health;
  • synthesize and translate women's health knowledge into a variety of information tools and services;
  • act as the provincial adviser on women's health to stakeholders, including the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care;
  • provide expert advice and recommendations in response to ministerial and government requests.

Echo succeeds the former Ontario Women's Health Council, where Campbell also served as a board member until 2007. Campbell says she is "delighted to build on the work of the Council, supporting the building of healthier communities by the supporting the health of the women of Ontario."

Campbell was most recently President and CEO of Grey Bruce Health Services, a network of six hospitals serving the largely rural region for more than seven years. Previously, she was a senior administrator with Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre and CEO of Women's College Hospital in Toronto. She was also Chair of the Ontario Hospital Association eHealth Council, Co-Chair of the Ontario Physician Hospital Care Committee and a member of the Provincial Critical Care Expert Panel. Campbell holds a BSc degree in Nursing (University of Western Ontario) and an MBA (York University).

Under Campbell's leadership, Echo is quickly establishing its Toronto-based offices, recruiting staff and building relationships within the women's health and broader healthcare community.

The program aims to foster media coverage of health and health research and to better inform Canadians of research-based health discoveries of relevance in their lives. Specific goals include building interest in health research issues among Canadian journalists. The awards are also meant to encourage journalists to go "above and beyond" their normal level of coverage.

The 33 applications received for this program were evaluated by an eight-member independent merit review committee. Four of the members were nominated by the Canadian Science Writers Association and four by the Association des communicateurs scientifiques du Québec. The members were: Jake Berkowitz, Dominique Forget, Timothy Hornyak, Tim Lougheed, André Picard, Gilles Provost, Mélanie Robitaille and Mathieu-Robert Sauvé.

Bridgepoint Health Receives National Award for Leadership

Bridgepoint is a winner of the IPAC / Deloitte Public Sector Leadership Awards program for 2008. The award, founded by the Institute of Public Administrators of Canada and Deloitte Canada, recognizes Bridgepoint's leadership in organizational transformation and influencing health system change.
