Mobilizing Nursing Leadership for Planetary Health: Preparing the Healthcare Workforce for a Warming World
Abstract
The intensifying climate crisis poses significant challenges to healthcare systems, including extreme weather events, rising temperatures and evolving disease patterns. In response, healthcare leaders must both adapt care delivery and pursue system-wide decarbonization. Nursing roles are expanding to include advocacy for planetary health, with educational programs working to equip nurses for climate-responsive practice. This commentary presents examples of nursing leadership in climate resilience and calls on healthcare organizations to leverage the profession's capacity to lead efforts integrating planetary health into sustainable, climate-resilient patient care.
